The newly opened CSE building, Bill & Melinda Center provides the CSE Department at the University of Washington with spacious community space and advanced facilities. However, it has led to a unique challenge for the CSE Ph.D. community.
The Ph.D. community is centered around offices and/or research labs, where the students spend the most of their time. Therefore, when some labs moved to the new Gates Center, a spatial division arose and separated the Ph.D. community into two sub-communities. The Ph.D. students now have fewer spontaneous interactions with each other.
